Hi

I am a complete novice, and rather than learning completely by trial and error, I am just wondering if someone could direct me to somewhere that I might be able to start understanding Photoshop 7.0 and the application of all it’s tools.

I’d rather not have to pay for the adobe.com online tuition course at this stage, I am wanting to learn the basic functions first.

Thanks

Not to sound trite, but isn’t the user’s manual the best place to start learning about Photoshop? While it may not be loaded with tutorials, it’s still a pretty darn good source of information to begin getting acquainted with Photoshop’s tools.

No doubt however, the web does offer a wealth of information about Photoshop in actual use. I’ve collected a reasonable number of links that may point you in directions worth exploring, which you can find at <http://jazzdiver.com/photoshop>. Just scroll down the first page to the Web Links.

Spend US$45.00 and buy Deke McClelland’s Photoshop Bible.

You won’t regret the investment and you’ll refer to it often.

I agree. The place to start is the manual. Even if you don’t get much out of it at first, you’ll have an overall idea of the capabilities and a grasp of the photoshop "jargon" when you’re done. This will facilitate your search for knowledge immensely

I agree 100%. This is even better than the Photoshop manual, IMHO. The PS manual is fine if you know the nomenclature and what you are trying to accomplish, but if you are n00b, quite often PS calls things by names you would never guess. Deke’s book is just great reading as well as the best reference I have ever found.

that’s the main reason for reading the manual first IMO. So you get to know those names ("jargon") and will recognize them when you see them. Also when you ask questions you can ask about "the mask" rather than "the thing that sits over my image while hiding something underneath it."

Just my 2 knuts.

True.. except CS doesn’t have a freaking manual! Try sitting on the pot and perusing the help menu… my monitor and keyboard don’t have cables long enough to stretch inot the bathroom. And the PS7 manual is quite dry, even for me, a prolific reader.

Even a Dummies book (yikes!) is better than the PS Manual as far as reading to learn the basics. Of course, nothing beats just playing with PS, which is how I learned. Just click and drag and adjust… and of course type photoshop tutorial into Google and you will learn more in a day than with several months of playing in PS without direction.

You can buy a CS manual if you want. But I’d start with Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book and do all the chapter exercises.

Agreed–I use Classroom in a Book for my Photoshop 1 class. It is easy to understand and the lessons really walk you through the basic functionality of Photoshop. If you are using 7 Sam’s club has Classroom in a Book 7 for 24.95 (about half of the $45.00 street price!)
