Hi all. I am on PS 6. I am wondering how do I make my white backround transparent? Basically when I insert my tiffs, I need to be able to transparent the white, so it doesn’t show up when I print. Thanks

Are you printing on non-white paper?

Are the tiffs on a different layer? If so just drag the Background to the trash.

If they are on the same layer as the white background you need to make a selection and delete or mask out the white.

Put your images on their own layers. Remove the white background layer.

IIt is not clear exactly what you are trying to accomplish, though. How are you printing the image? Are you placing the image in a different program, such as a page-layout program?

aaaah!!! I see says the blind man. So, you need to select (by pixel color, I guess) the white backround, turn that into another layer, then delete it. Correct?

That’s what I was wondering.

If you’re dealing with a rectangular image like a photo and want to get rid of the white border, just crop it.

If you’re dealing with an image shape that is other than rectangular, then the previous answers should work; saving as PSD (would EPS or PDF work?), if you are importing the image into Illustrator, or maybe InDesign. I’d still crop out any excess image area though. If you’re importing into Quark (atleast an older version like 4.11, don’t know aobout higher) you should create a clipping path and save it as EPS.

That’s one way. Depends on the image though. If you have smooth edges and good contrast with the background you might be okay. If your object has fuzzy edges or complicated shapes (hair for instance) it becomes more complicated.

Huh? White doesn’t print anyway. The printer simply doesn’t print anything for a white pixel, so even if you use non-white paper you don’t have any problems. In fact, you have a problem if you *do* want to print white on non-white paper…

Sorry, I should be more clear. I am using this tiff as an import into an AUTOCAD drawing. The drawing itself has LandUse colors(industrial = red, residential = blue, etc…), but the white background is blocking out the AUTOCAD drawing.
So I need a way to "transparentize" the white, so I can see what is behind the image. I think I got it figured out, by selecting by pixel, then making that a layer, then deleting the layer. I hope it works

Eh?
Why don’t you pull the white ink cartridge before you print?

It’s common to select the background with a magic wand, then delete it. This sometimes works, but the problem is the magic wand tool almost always results in more or less jaggy fringes around the edge of the image.

One quick way to get a transparent effect is to change the mode of the layer containing the image to darken.

The best way of all is with a layer mask, which is a topic in itself. —
