I am using Windows XP and Photoshop 6.0
I have scan some color photographs using the HP 5200C scanner. I use Photoshop to crop some outdoor pictures.
But when I tried to print the pictures using the Canon i860 printer, the printout is dull and darker compare to the original.

How do I print bright and colorful pictures? Thank you.

Response: to make sure that what you see at every step of the process, and yours is classic, scanned image to monitor to printer to paper, you must first calibrate your system. The process is a bit long, and involves EVERY step of your process. I’d start with a Google.Groups search for "calibration" and start looking at the suggestions. Add terms such as "scanner," "monitor," etc. and you will start getting some ideas.

At the least, you must calibrate your monitor, then add in your printer (ICC profiles, paper, etc.), and then lastly work on your monitor’s software.

You have a bit of reading and a half-dozen calibration wizards ahead of you, but you *should* be able to get close without 3rd party hardware.

Sorry that there is not a quick, simple answer.

Here are some things to try:

1) outside of Photoshop, set your printer driver to accept sRGB images.
2) set your working space to sRGB
3) open one of your images, and click yes when Photoshop asks whether you want to convert to your working space. If Photoshop does not ask, do the conversion manually.

Once this is working, there are additional refinements, but this procedure is very likely get you set up with better looking prints. —

OK, I already make the file as photoshop psd file.
Is there anyway I can make the content of these file’s color brighter and less dark when printed at the Canon i850 inkjet printer?

Amy – are you saying the image you print is not as bright as the original picture before it is scanned?

If so there are lots of things you can try to improve the image, Try Levels – there are lots of tutorials on the net – this is the first I came across

Yes. That’s one of the things Photoshop is for.

Use the Image->Adjust->Levels or Image->Adjust->Curves command.

OK, thank you, this is nice. But I only have Photoshop 6.0. The curve command does not show the histogram.
When I click the "auto" button, the picture gets even darker with higher contract.
Any advise?

Better read my message again!! I said Levels – not Curves!

Can I suggest you get a book on Basic Photoshop from the library, or you can buy books on Photoshop 6 quite cheaply now! and it won’t be wasted if you upgrade to a newer version.

Another thing to try. Print from Internet Explorer, and see if the colors are still dull. If they are brighter, this isolates the problem to your printer setup.

OK, printed from IE, not much difference.
I think the image in Photoshop is dull and dark.
Not the printer.

Don’t use the Auto button. Instead, use Levels to get the light and dark points where they should be, then use Curves to lighten the image and increase contrast if necessary.

First is your monitor color balanced. Then use photo shop to adjust the brightness of your images that seem dull Scanners are not the best source of images but then you have to expect to make some adjustments.
