GIMP vs Photoshop , Image Size

I resised a 1.4M tiff image into jpeg using both GIMP 2.2 and Photoshop Element 4. The GIMP resized image was only 10k whereas the Photoshop resized image was 50k…thats quite a difference..is GIMP using a better compression algorithm?

The GIMP could have used more compression. When you choose ‘Save As’ under GIMP, you should be presented with a ‘quality slider’ on the save as dialog box.

I think GIMP defaults to a level of 85.. If you use the slider to increase the value, the resulting images will have larger file sizes.

JPEG is JPEG is JPEG; they both use the same compression algorithm. Most likely, you told GIMP to use greater compression, which means a poorer-quality image. (JPEG is "lossy" compression. The quality of your image is deliberately degraded in order to make the file smaller.)

This assumes, of course, that you used Photoshop’s Save for Web command to save the JPEG. If you used Save As, the Photoshop image will be larger on disk because by default Photoshop includes extra information in the file, such as a custom icon, a preview, a color profile, and so on.
