I have just shot several hundred ‘raw’ files with my Canon EOS5D, and find that these get onto my PC in a .cr2 format, which my version of Photoshop (6.0) doesn’t read. Please, what is the best / easiest way for me to be able to allow the .cr2 image files to be read by my version of Photoshop?

— Many thanks, T

You’d be far better off upgrading to CS2. This is especially true since only version 7.0 and higher will be eligible for low priced upgrades to CS3.

The latest versions of Photoshop use a camera raw plug-in to process the files. This generally offers the most flexibility in processing.

The other option is to use the raw conversion software that should have come with your camera to create .jpg’s from the raw files. It will work, just not give you as many processing options as Photoshop camera raw.

You might also want to try the free beta of Adobe Lightroom. It includes a beta version of the Adobe Camera Raw engine that shows you much of what will be able to do in the upcoming Photoshop CS3. The functionality in Lightroom is very similar to that in Camera Raw processor in the beta of CS3. You need to have CS2 to use the CS3 beta for more than two days, but there’s no eligibility requirement for Lightroom.
