Want to do complex gradient

I am trying to duplicate the gradient that was done, the gradient is done in a pattern, so far I can only get the gradient to effect an area in a straight line, albeit you can change the angle of the line, but what if you want a gradient more "natural", i.e. not a linear line but a brush stroke. Is this possible?
