Adding ‘snow’ to photographs using Photoshop

Hi there,

I’ve got some nice photos that I’d like to add snow to, using Photoshop 7, to make them look more Christmas-like. I then want to email them to my friends as e-Christmas cards.

I’ve searched the web and Goggle Groups for ways to do this, but I haven’t found much that works well for me.

The best I’ve seen is on this website:
http://www.apple.com/creative/resources/snow/index.html

My only problem is that I can’t follow it this, and my results aren’t that great. If anyone else has used this tutorial and feels kind enough to list the instructions in an idiot-proof list, then feel free! For example, it says ‘add noise,’ but I don’t know how much to add; and it will say ‘add Gaussian blur,’ but I never seem to get the numbers right… Basically, it probably needs a lot of experimentation, but I’m left scratching my head as it keeps messing up for me.

Alternatively, does anyone have any other good website tutorials that show how to add snow like this?

Anyway, thanks for any help or recommendations.

Regards,

Stephen

Thanks for the link. I tried this tutorial, and although I was able to follow it exactly, I found that the snow effect looked fake, and there was far too much of it. I’m after a tutorial that does a job similar to or exactly like this one:
http://www.apple.com/creative/resources/snow/index.html

I have looked on Google, but with no luck, but I’ll keep on looking…

Thanks agian,

Ste

That tut should work for you if you play with the settings until you get the effect that you want. It’s the only method that works for me. There is also a free plug-in here: http://www.v-d-l.com/adrenaline_snowflakes.html that works pretty well. Once again, you have to experiment to get the effect that you want.

I kept playing with the settings, but nothing looked right. It was my fault, but I needed something that basically told me exactly what to do. Thanks for the link, I downloaded the plugin and it was very easy to use. The only problem was that the snow was round so didn’t look quite right in my image.

In the end, I found this website, and it works for me:

Thanks,

Ste
