I’m sure this exists, I’ve just never seen one that works without a bunch of fussing.

Is there a program that can take a directory of .jpg’s from my camera and automatically make four 4×5 prints (or full frame) on an 8×10 sheet of paper. Something REAL quick and simple. My daughter is just getting into photography and I refuse to spend my time resizing, cutting and pasting 25 pictures of her stuffed animals.

Photoshop can do it with the contact sheet, but it takes alot of room away for the filename.

Thanks,

Philip

If you select a directory, then select all images in the directory, then select the 4×5 button it will fill the correct number of pages with 4 4×5 images per page. You can then do some minor color and brightness correction via a mask on the image and not change the original. It’s a magic program. 🙂

Neither program appear to do what Qimage will do. While they print contact sheets, and may do a good job of that, they do not appear to be anywhere close to Qimage unless I missed something.

You mean other than free? for someone who clearly stated: "My daughter is just getting into photography" why spend almost $50 on something she may not even be interested
in next week? Other than some filters, which he’s already got with Photoshop it doesn’t seem your overly priced
Qimage does all that much more for someone simply looking to print contact sheets for a daughter’s budding hobby.

All you missed Bob is the enthusiasm of (seemingly) getting something for nothing which we all know doesn’t happen. Both of those programs Voivod offered have to be purchased, just the same as lunch at McDonalds! Doug

Good one Warren…
Until I removed XP and installed 2000, I used this surprisingly good ‘toy’ MS decided not to include in the release of XP. They left a lot out of XP. Like support for USB 2.0. Any scanners needing that speed either run dog slow or not at all under XP and MS’s response to "install service pack 1a", never did fix the USB thing.

My gripe about these ‘MS toys’ is the same one I have about XP. I bought XP professional in a boxed set and paid heaps for it only to find it doesn’t have the functionality Windows 2000 has. "Photographers Power Toys" is free and it does what the MS toys do only it works under any windows from 95 on. Doug

I made a decision not to respond. I only checked out what the programs will do, and the will not do what the OP asked to be done. Even if they are "free" it looks like you would get what you paid for.

Neither of those programs HAVE to be paid for. ImageWalker is nagware and fully functional for an unlimited time. Dpic is completely free, so I’m guessing you didn’t bother to even open the link I provided since one of the very few sentences on the page is:
"But you should simply try it because it’s Freeware!" It also states on the download page:
"DPIC is a freeware to create contact images as JPEG pictures:"

What part of ‘free’ don’t you understand?

So you don’t base your responses on what people want
to do but what you think they should be doing?

You are right of course. What the OP said was:

"I’m sure this exists, I’ve just never seen one that works without a bunch of fussing.

Is there a program that can take a directory of .jpg’s from my camera and automatically make four 4×5 prints (or full frame) on an 8×10 sheet of paper. Something REAL quick and simple. Photoshop can do it with the contact sheet, but it takes alot of room away for the filename."

So somewhere in his post I missed the part about free. I also assumed that when he said he wanted "four 4×5 prints (or full frame) on an 8×10" that he meant just that. I had also assumed when he said "Photoshop can do it with the contact sheet, but it takes alot of room away for the filename." that he did not want another program that would do contact sheets. So:

There is Irfanview. It will not do what he wants done but it is free: http://www.irfanview.com/

There is also Thumbs Plus. It will not do what he wants done but it is free: http://www.cerious.com/

There is ACDSee. It will not do what he wants done, but is as free as one of the ones you mentioned because it has a trial period.
http://www.acdsystems.com

Then there are the two you recommended. They of course will not do what he asked for, but heck, they are free, well, kind of in a kinky sort of way.

There is one program that will do exactly what he asked for. It to is free based on your criteria. They have a trial version that during the trial is "nagware". But you are right, I should have recommended a program based on my criteria rather than respond to what he asked for.

Qimage will do *exactly* what he wants done. Not what you think he should want done. But it’s really up to him now because he has a list of programs that will not do the job and one that will.

Warren:

What do you mean by "Windows XP". I am running XP Home, is there a feature buried in here that I didn’t find? If so, I feel rather stupid for wasting the group’s time.

Please, let me know the exe’s name or where I can find the download.

Thanks,

Philip

ImageMagick ( http://www.imagemagick.or) is a free tool, multi-platform as I do not know what OS you use.

ImageMagick is batch oriented so your time spent is minimal once you get the commands correct and in batch files (or whatever your OS uses).
I.E. on windows you could create a batch file (.bat) containing the
following on one line:

montage -geometry x500+10+10 -tile 2×2 -label "%%f" -font Arial -pointsize 12 *.jpg dir3.jpg

It will take all the files with the extension of jpg in a directory, scale the files to 500 pixels wide, leave a 10×10 pixel white space around the images, tiled 2×2, labels the image with the filename without the path using the Arial font at 12 points and will create an output jpg file called dir3.jpg. If more than 4 images are in a file, the output file will be called dir3.jpg.0, dir3.jpg.1, dir3.jpg.2 …. etc, depending on how many files are in your directory.

Then use photoshop to print scaled to a 8×10 and rotated if needed.

It’s an option that is free and I believe gets you close to what you are looking for – quick, simple (IMHO), small and clear filename and not much fussing (IMHO), and repeatable <— I added that one.

I don’t know about directly accessing your camera as you request. You would have to download to a directory on your computer first.

Irfanview. It is free. The thumbnail utility has a good contact sheet tool. Give it a try.

Another idea:
Cut the paper in quarters!

: – )

You can make a custom paper size & save that as the default.
