I have many snapshots that will be put into an Adobe Premiere video, to be played on a DVD. I know I can set the height and width for cropping them, but is there a setting that will set the cropping ratio, and allow me to control how much of the picture I crop? I want to set the proportion ratio rather than the size. Thank you

Just set the proportions on the option bar of the crop tool – don’t set the resolution and PS won’t resample.

I want to crop still pictures in Photoshop which will be used to make DVD video using Premiere. I want to be able to crop the pictures in a way that they have the correct proportion to fill a DVD screen. I know I could just put in the size, but I would like the additional option of cropping proportionally. Is there a way to do this? Thank you.

Ruth,

The dimensions you want (assuming you are doing NTSC Video in Premiere) is 720 px x 534 px. This will scale your photographs.

Tom here….I’m doing much work in genealogy because i would like to leave each of my 18 grandchildren a DVD with all the documents that i have researched and accumulated of my ancesters. There is probably about 100 manifests and documents. I use Moviestar5 to convert .jpeg files into .mpeg files so that they can be burned onto a DVD and then viewed on TV using the DVD player attached to the TV.. Using my Photoshop7 (i’m good at it) i would like to know what size should each document be and what psi should be used so that it fills the TV screen completely and also that no material is cut off so it is not seen on the TV.???Also what other prelimenary work should be done to enhance the final quality for viewing on a TV.???

Thank you……

Tom,

I wouldn’t resize the documents or convert them to MPEG. Using the VCD option in Nero each image becomes a track. The fies are still stored as JPGs and will be auto sized to fit by the DVD player. The advantage is that they files can still be vied and printed on a computer at their true resolution. Most DVD players will also allow you to zoom in while viewing which would make text easier to read on the TV.

The only reason to convert to video would be to add transitions and\or audio or to use the image for a menu background for a DVD video. No matter what you do make sure you include the highest resolution files on the disk. Why limit them to the outdated TV resolutions. I am sure most of your grandchildren would probably prefer to see something like that on their computer anyway.

Another advantage is that it should now fit on a CD. Most set top DVD players also support CD-R’s and they could use it in their computer even if they don’t have a DVD-ROM or set top DVD player.

Tom,

It should let you do the same thing with a DVD. I just don’t know if it will still let you use the VCD option while giving you 4.7 GB to work with or if you need to use the DVD video settings (Assuming they work the same way).

If the VCD option doesn’t work for a DVD go ahead and try dragging JPGs into the authoring window the same way you have been with your MPEG video. If it adds it as a track it should work fine. On the bright side it will only cost you $1 for a blank DVD to test with.

With only 100 documents they should fit on a 700 MB cd just fine or were some of those multi-page documents?

I made a disk for a friend and fit their entire wedding video, 130 Pictures and the kodak image viewer in case they wanted to view them on a computer instead and it all easily fit on a CD.

follow up with PhotoHelp!

I’m pretty sure you can still use 4.7gb dvd-r media as VCD.. done that before..

simply, just create a vcd, but burn to the total size of your media.

tomlomeo,

It will work the same way regardless of media. The only difference is what type of media your drive takes and if the players can all read the type of media you need to use. DVD Player Compatibility List <http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php>

photoshoplearner , Tom here again you said "I’m pretty sure you can still use 4.7gb dvd-r media as VCD.. done that before.Simply, with Nero, just create a vcd, but burn to the total size of your media." My question is you said dvd-r…..why not dvd+r or dvd + or -RW???

Thank you

Tom,

I believe photoshoplearner was using DVD-R as a generic term for any recordable DVD. To clarify it doesn’t matter if it is +R, -R, +RW, -RW or DVD-RAM the software will compile the project the same way. In other words if it works with DVD-R it will also work with DVD+R if that is what your drive takes.

Dear Photo Help, you had written :

The problem is that i CAN’T view and print these files on MY computer.I am able to view all very nicely on my DVD player..What do i do to view these on my computer… If i open the CD on my computer is see the following folders: CDI, EXT, MPEGAV, SEGMENT, and VCD. please once again i need your help

There should also be a "pictures" folder if you checked the "Store pictures in" box on the "Video CD" tab.

Tom,

In Nero as you are creating the CD. I am using 5.5.9.9 on this computer. Just select the "Video CD" option. Then the first tap is "Video CD" where it should have the option for "Store source Pictures in".

It doesn’t sound like your current disk has the Pictures folder so the option must not have been checked before. If you still can’t find the option just create your own folder and drag the JPG’s into that folder as well as the window for the tracks.

No don’t drag them to the folders. Drag them into the window below with "track", "Title", "Duration", Etc… They will then automatically be stored in the Pictures folder as well.

To view them on the computer you would need to either have a viewer installed on the computer or include a stand alone viewer on the CD (Something like the viewer that comes on Kodak Photo CD’s).
