Any easy way to "balance" the lighting?

Is there any other method to try to "balance" the lighting within a photograph besides using dodge/burn? By "balance", i’m refering to the ability to make a photograph have similar contrast. The scenario here is that using a digital camera I took a picture of a picture hanging on a wall. When I get it into Photoshop, there is a circular area near the top of the image that is brighter than the rest of the picture (probably a reflection from the glass) which I would like to remove. I tried to use dodge/burn to remove it but the results seem to end up blotchy even if I set the exposure setting very low and use a brush with a smooth edge. I realize that there is no way to make it "perfect" – aka – magic solution, but wondered if there was some other method I’m overlooking.

Hi Ryan, one way to do this would be to have an adjustment layer such as levels or curves along with the layer mask (that appears with the adjustment layer) so that the adjustments only affect the light area.

What Helen said, but I would use a radial gradient on the layer mask centered on the bright spot. You’ll need to play and vary the opacity and stuff like that.

Good point Colin, that would be much easier than trying to use a brush I reckon.
