I have 800+ slides I want to scan into Photoshop 6. I am fairly new to Photoshop.

All of these slides are from 1965-1975

What are the kinds of options can I use in Photoshop to improve the quality of these slides.

Thanks

Warren

Hi Warren,

Give us an example of a fairly bad one.
Do they have a red cast?
Are they reversal film or raster prints? (They did that in the 60’s!) Do you have a film scanner that can hold framed slides?
Are they "wet" emulsion-to-emulsion copies? (Emulsion on wrong side: wrong autofocus in scanner, put in backwards and flip in PS).
Are they realy 800?

While not certain of this, I’ll also add another question: Are the slides Kodachrome or are they an E-6 processed film such as Ektachrome, Fujichrome, etc.? I’ve never scanned any of my Kodachrome slides before, but I vaguely recall reading somewhere that Kodachrome may be more difficult to scan due to the different nature of its emulsion. I can’t say that makes too much sense to me, but at the very least it may be helpful to know.

I did read that Kodachrome can cause problems with ICE – something to do with its opacity to infrared.

Photoshop has extensive retouch/repair capabilities but there are no automatic buttons that make old slides look perfect. One really needs to learn how to evaluate the slides problems and decide which combination of techniques will yield the best result. Usually that involves color correction and sometimes repairs to damaged areas. As Rob suggested, post an example or two of typical images and we can point you in the general direction. I have worked on the family archives of old slides and can tell you that you will probably want to start with the most important images. You may quickly find that the time spent is much greater than you imagined. I quickly prioritized my project after I spent 2 days on 14 slides. Let’s see, I’m 52 years old now and there are 2180 slides, 2180/14…..
