Pressy Time!

About to buy a new monitor display, had my Mitsubishi 19" for three years. I can either buy a 20-22" crt weighing in at 60+ lbs, but I fancy a Formac Gallery 1900 OX LCD.

I am aware that there may be problems with colour management, most of my work is for prepress. Formac claim that the 1900 OX gives accurate colour (it can have pantone colour management).

Has the colour mangement situation changed at all recently, or any advice on the Formac/alternatives or should I stick with crt for next 3 years.

Jeff,

I don’t use an LCD, but if I recall correctly, Ian Lyons had positive things to say about Formac. I didn’t look up your model, but if it’s digital v. analog, then you stand a good chance at getting decent results.

In order to get an accurate profile, you may have to use a 3rd party solution (such as a spyder) to calibrate the monitor. As far as I am aware, the issues for an LCD include: does it have brightness and contrast controls? Will viewing angle be an issue for you?

Even still, in most cases there’d be a workaround for producing reasonably accurate color, but it may not be a "one size fits all" solution. If it were me, and I really wanted to use an LCD, I would buy it from a place that had a decent return policy – here in the states, CDW will accpet returns on most items within 30 days no questions asked, no re-stocking fee. That’s one of the reason I buy from them. So I’d get one from a place that had a similar policy, or talk to the sales rep, and get some kind of assurance that if it doesn’t work, you could return it.

Peace,
Tony

Thanks,

I looked at Ian’s site. In his review of the Apple 23" screen he comments that the Formac wont work with a Matrox card on a PC, which of course is the card often recomended for Photoshop and the one I have!
