With the addition of the Graphire3, I see little reason to spring the 2x extra for the Intuos2. At least, for photo retouching and restoration work. The only difference I can see from the Wacom pages are:

1) The Intuos2 is available in bigger sizes. I’ve used the 11" Intuos and find it more trouble to navigate as the pen movements are too big.

2) The pen has 1000+ gradations of pressure instead of 500.

3) The pen is senistive to the angle.

Are there other differences I’m not seeing?

I like the angle effect of the Intuos, but I can’t say it’s worth 200+ in the 6×8 size.

The Intuos also has other pens available, as the airbrush. Pen ID and the menu. The larger pads are better for painting as you can make stokes as if painting a canvas, using your arm instead of just your wrist. Also as far as cost the pads do last for years.

I’ve had a couple Graphires and have been using an Intuos2 for a couple years now (both in 4X5 and recently in 12X18 sizes). The Intuos2 tablets are well worth the additional money, they have higher resolution, a MUCH better mouse (and the possibility of using their optional 5-button unit), and a more adaptable pen. These are some of the reasons I gave the Graphires up in favor of the Intuos2 (and the Graphires fell apart on me or became erratic).

You should be able to configure the larger tablets to suit your desired pen movement range.
