Making alpha channel visible?

I have 2 selections saved as channels in my channels palette. What is happening when I click on the eye icon in the channels palette for one of the saved selections? It seems to place a red layer on top of the image. What is it actually doing?

It is giving you a view similar to Quick Mask Mode and showing the alpa channel as a mask
