When I open a photo in Photoshop 5.5 and make some changes (rgb to cmyk, resolution), then save it as a Photoshop eps file, the file saves as an Illustrator eps file. Why? When I take Illustrator off the computer and do the same thing, the files save as a generic eps file and I have to specify which program to use when opening them. Shouldn’t they simply save as Photoshop eps files? Thanks for your help.

Windows O/S associates a file extension with one application. You have .EPS associated with Illustrator. Therefore ALL .EPS files are associated with Illustrator. Winows doesn’t know or care what application created the file, just that it is an EPS.

This is one area where Windows differs considerably from the Mac. With the Mac, each file has a resource fork that states the file type and the file creator, and the file will be associated with its creator.

Thanks a lot, I didn’t know that. Is there any way to make Windows allow the eps tag to be associated with two programs? I need to save eps files in each program from time to time.

Another question: I am strongly considering changing to Mac. I work with QuarkXpress, Photoshop and Illustrator mainly. What might be the main difficulties/advantages I will encounter, and would you have any advice about how to go about changing systems?

Thanks a lot for your help.

No, none at all as far as double-clicking is concerned. However if you right-click on an EPS in Windows Explorer it will offer you the choice of Photoshop or Illustrator.

The applications you mention are almost identical on both platforms. However, with the investment you’ve got in Windows Software, a change is going to be pretty expensive! Although Adobe do offer cross-platform upgrades, it is only at a fractional discount on the full retail price, and AFAIK Quark don’t offer any discount at all.

You will also be going "against the flow" – There are currently many more shops moving from Mac to PC than the other way round…
