That is pretty funny but I think it’s hilarious that people are allowed to turn on a computer without even a basic knowledge of how to use one. This is a funny example in that this guy knows how to use newsgroups, and apparently Photoshop 6.0 to a certain extent, but has no idea what a search engine is.

i have a question:

if someone does not know how to do a task, how do they know whether it has a simple solution or not? and therefore how should they judge whether they might offend someone’s sensibilities by asking nicely for help in a HELP FORUM such as this? ponder away…

my solution to the problem: if you consider such a question beneath you, do not respond: allow someone more helpful and less judgemental to assist the student, and save your mighty brain for the truly complex questions…

This is an example of having been trolled and having risen to the baiting. Rising to the bait makes you look worse.

Even people who know their stuff will occasionally resort to trollishly stupid behaviour while thinking they are being funny…. Don’t let them get to you. –USENET requires a cool approach and the ability to allow those who insert their metaphorical feet in their not so metaphorical mouths to chew and swallow said feet all by themselves.

The part of this that is of value to you, is the suggestion made regarding google groups and searching for info there. Everything that has been said about this topic within this newsgroup (a lot) is there. All the professional suggestions that have been made and would have to be made again are there. It’s a topic that keeps coming up.

My newsreader has broken the .url above. You will need to put put the whole on a single line and paste it into your web browser. It should bring up about 752 messages dealing with this subject "red eye." If it doesn’t work, check out

http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?hl=en

and you can go from there.

If I want to ask a question and you don’t want to answer, just shut up. —

You missed the point. You were the one being trolled, and you took the bait. Then, you still didn’t understand what was being explained to you and became offensive again. You really aren’t going to get much help with shouting and with gutter talk; you will be ignored. So, let’s see if this helps you and if you thank people like phorbin for their advice or if you choose to go into another rant. Take a deep breath and think about it.

here is the answer to your question. 90% of users never open their GD manual. So, why should I go out of my way to help a lazy
person where a question like this gets asked gillions of times. In fact, if Google or a search engine was intimidating, searching
past threads in a particular newsgroup you would find the answer. Welcome to NG netiquete.

This maybe true, but I have PS7 upgrade and it does not have a GD manual to open. The Help files are very short on real help. Goggle is fine to a point, but you can spend hours culling out the BS to find good information. This is why some come here to seek help. If you don’t have anything positive to offer the original poster and you feel such post are beneath you, why bother? The name ‘stupid_idiot’ seems to fit.

When you open CS, the little welcome screen offers help on several subjects: Tutorials, Tips and Tricks, Colour Management etc.
Click on tutorials and the second subject is red eye removal.

Good Answer.

Also, in other newgroups I read there is a FAQ that people who ask questions of this sort are referred to. This seems to eliminate a lot of problems potential problems.

I searched for FAQ in this ng and couldn’t read the messages because my ng reader said they were expired. How about we figure out a way to create a FAQ for this group and just refer people to it when appropriate?

I agree 100% with you Steph. I find myself hesitant to post to this group sometimes. A while back someone asked for a red eye fix and someone posted a method that my friend who is a graphic designer had never heard of. (We both use that method now.)

Seems almost like a school bully type of thing. One person starts (usually one of the same three) and others join in.

As you said, if the question is insulting or too stupid for you, move on.

Feel free to ask, just be aware that you should try to do a little homework *before* you do it. For example, doing a google search on "fix red eye" will result in over 500,000 hits, and this does NOT include a search of the newsgroups. Searching the newsgroups yields another 37,900 hits.

Most questions here have been asked and answered many, many times. Still, if you’ve got a problem that you just can’t find the answer to, then this IS the place (along with the Adobe PS forum.)

Exactly! So why try 20 things that don’t work or are complicated when you get 5 realistic answers from people that know and use the product. There is more than 1 way and as I posted earlier, I read a "red eye" solution on this NG that I have never heard about, not in Photoshop WOW, or PS help.

That’s something I don’t get about this NG. The same thing happens in all NG, (repeated questions). On a NG for Excel, and it seems repeat questions are answered each time as if it were the most unusual question ever heard of and the answers are amazing. Considering that a spread sheet is more of a science and that PS is definitely an art, you would think that there is only one way to do it in Excel. People that weren’t around or didn’t have a solution will respond to the question when it is asked again. How can you learn more when you say "That question was asked and answered, there is nothing more to be added or learned and there are not any newer ways."

BTW, does anyone use the color replacement tool for red eye? I haven’t liked the results at all. I still use the lasso, apply image, green, darken. Hopefully, I will be getting a camera with an adjustable flash so the red eye problem will be greatly reduced.

newbie’s
with questions such as this one. If you can’t ask simple question then what’s the point to have the newsgroup?

Feel free to ask, just be aware that you should try to do a little
homework
*before* you do it. For example, doing a google search on "fix red eye" will result in over 500,000 hits, and this does NOT include a search of
the
newsgroups. Searching the newsgroups yields another 37,900 hits.
Most questions here have been asked and answered many, many times. Still, if you’ve got a problem that you just can’t find the answer to, then this
IS
the place (along with the Adobe PS forum.)

Hmm. Is this a Forum for adults seeking help with technical problems, o is it some form of scream therapy?

Calling people "cocksuckers" and using "gay" as an insult are what on might expect from ignorant children. Can we next expect racia epithets?

It’s disturbing enough that the responsible posters feel they need t instruct others on acceptable Forum etiquette, but it become irritatingly absurd when those others try to rationalize thei boorishness.

Still, heated debate can be invigorating. It’s always interesting t see when someone like "The Wolf" (no comment on this obviousl self-aggrandizing handle)

You face 500.00 hits if you don’t use Google properly.
Use Google Groups with the Advanced Search feature.
For instance, do a search for answers to "red Eyes"given in the NG alt.graphics.photoshop in the past three month
http://tinylink.com/?TqVOSKa7hZ
This will give you 7 hits!

It doesn’t matter whether they do or not. What it does mean is that every time they the same question gets asked over and over again, you just refer them to the FAQ.

I like to use the sponge to desaturate rather than messing around with the marquee to lasso. Then switch to black and brush in color mode, then burn in any remaining areas as needed. This allows me to preserve catchlights. If a catchlight is "unnatural", dab with the brush in normal mode at a reduced opacity to adjust it. This allows maximum flexibility with the many variations on red-eye that you will get.

That isn’t the point I was trying to make, and since I’m having a little trouble making myself clear in here to certain people, let me try again. If you do a google search and limit it, either by specific terminology or by specific newsgroup (this one for example), you’ll at least eliminate what has already been suggested.

Many of us do try to chip away at some of these posts (ie, "My monitor does not match my prints", "What is color management", "How do I remove red-eye",
etc., etc., etc.), but the amount and frequency of them can often be overwhelming. We’re here to learn things too, and don’t mind helping out, but it’s OK to ask you to try to determine if there is already an answer to your question first. Is that not reasonable?

BTW, does anyone use the color replacement tool for red eye? I haven’t liked the results at all. I still use the lasso, apply image, green, darken. Hopefully, I will be getting a camera with an adjustable flash so the red eye problem will be greatly reduced.

The color replacement tool works great, but it replaces color with grey (or color, if you’ve picked one) that matches the luminosity of the previous color. If you need it to be darker, you’re going to have to paint it, or select it and change the luminosity using either curves or levels.

The newsgroup Gestapo needs a place to live; questions they don’t like provide that. Every group has them.

You don’t understand how newsgroups work. If you decide to put your business in the newsgroup then the newsgroup gets to comment on your business.

If you don’t want comments, then keep your questions to yourself.

I’m a fairly recent ‘member’ of the group and a new user of Photoshop. In spite of that, I have offered a couple of suggestions in regards a couple of fairly simple questions posed by members and unlike you, I don’t judge the question. What I have seen is far too many clowns like you who jump on questions posed by ‘newbies’ rather than trying to help. And as for ‘stupid’ comments, yours certainly qualifies, officer.
