I am upgrading my system, and I’m comparing the following systems:

Dell 8300 with p4 3.0 ghz 800mhz Front size bus; 1 gb DDR dual channel SDRAM at 400 MHZ; 120GB SATA 7200 RPM Harddrive;

or

Dell Precision Work Station with P4 3.0Ghz, 512k Cache 800 mhz FSB; 1gig DDR SDRAM 333 mhz; 120 GB SATA 7200 RPM Drive with "Databurst Cache"

or

Dell Precision™ Workstation 450 Desktop
Intel® Xeon™ Processor, 3.06GHz, 1MB L3 Cache, 1gDDR 266 MHZ SDRAM; Same Databurst Cache HD as above.

I have read all the recent threads, but I am confused by the impact of slightly faster RAM, Dual Channel RAM, and the large L3 cache on the Xeon as oppossed to the 800 mhz FSB on the P4s. Also is databurst cache of any use?

All of these machines are under 2k, and I would like to keep it that way. It seems buying computers has become much more complex lately. : (

BTW: The machine will be used mostly for PS (with perhaps a little video editing in the future) and I tend to work with files under 100MB.

Let’s see … shall I pick Fuji apple A or Fuji apple B or Fuji apple C. Hey they all taste like Fuji apples! Just kidding! Every one of these machines is overkill. Pro’s used Photoshop quite successfully on 266mhz Pentium II’s. Personally I would pick the machine that had the fastest RAM and disk access. I converted to laptops only last year and there are a whole lot of them available now for 1/2 of what they cost 2 years ago. Good luck with your purchase. I understand PS7 starts up rather snappily with the 3G Pentiums. I don’t mind waiting with my lowly 2.4G Pentium.

Cheers,
Joe
