I am getting an error saying Adobe Photoshop (ver 7) could not open "my file" because there is not enough memory (RAM). I am trying to open a tiff file that was scanned at 2400dpi. The file size is 250MB. I am running 2 gig of RAM on a DELL XPS 3.0 HT processor. I also have plenty of space on my scratch disk (not that it should need it). I have alloted as much as 90% of my system to Photoshop and still get the same error. Thanks
A wild guess, but did you install/upgrade to 2 GB RAM after PS was installed? Then maybe PS doesn’t know that it can use this wealth. In that case reset your prefs.
I don’t know if RAM configuration is written in the prefs at all, but that’s wat I would try first.

The RAM was already installed prior to PS. Also, I’m not sure where to check the amount of space which I have available for the Windows Page file? Thanks
Go to options and set amount of memory available to Photoshop. Windos is acooperative system between all the applications. Photoshop will use what you specify is available. Make sure to keep memeory available for other applications. Fortunately with 2G that won’t be a problem.

Right Click on My Computer Icon and choose ‘properties from the flyout menu – then choose the tabbed header ‘Advanced’ and then click on the button marked performance options. See how the page File is setup, its min/max size and its location. —
No. I get the same message whether I attempt to do the radial blur on one layer (what I need to do), linked layers, or a flattened image. I can’t imagine I don’t have enough memory or scratch file space. The windows page file is on c: and is managed by Windows – 2047mb.
I’m not talking about layers but about channels. See if you can apply the radial blur a channel at a time – That is select just one channel from the channels palette.
Sorry, I didn’t read your message carefully. Yes, it works one channel at a time — on the layer previously selected in the layer palette. Is this the way it’s supposed to work?
If I do it on a one layer image it also works on the layer. If I do it on a two layer image the "not enough memory" message pops up and I have to go to channels to make it work.
you can do it one channel at a time and achive the same effect (great call len!). that means you’re borderline somewhere. what’s your image size and resolution? huge?
Then the message you are getting is absolutely true. Some filter operations have to be handled entirely in real RAM. They can generate huge amounts of data, in your case more than the available RAM.
Running the filter on a single channel is effectively running the filter on a file of only 1/3rd the size, which is why it works when running the filter on a single channel but fails when running it on the entire file.
I have been using PS for about 10 years and never before needed the radial blur. Doing it on a channel at a time isn’t too bad. Yes, the image was pretty big.
Thanks for all the tips. For some reason when I scan it in and save as a .tif (at 2400dpi) photoshop cannot open it (not enough RAM). However, I tried the .tif (at 600 dpi) and it opened it fine. I also scanned at 2400 dpi in .bmp and photoshop had no problem opening it (basically the same file size and dimensions as the .tif). Although I would rather work with the .tif, I guess I can work around it. Thanks again.
haytham, make sure you have enough free space on the drive with the ps scratch file on it. that message is telling you you’re running low on disk space.
Try going to edit>preferences>memory and imagecache set "maximum used by photoshop" to 90% (with 2 gigs) and cache levels to 4. you will then have to exit photoshop and restart for the settings to take effect. At the bottom of the page, click the little triangle and select efficency. You should now be operating at 100%. Going online and upgrading your bios, if you have not done so may be in order. Thanks a lot all..sorry been very busy.. I have no idea where the " ps scratch file " is because PS doesn’t run at all so there is no window to find any settings in..I’d like to know if PS has any connection to a bios upgrade though..I needed an upgrade for my bios recently ( for installing a large HDisk ) but found that the only upgrade I could get was for 25$ and no guarantee that it won’t kill my bios..Thanks again Haytham
Parker…have you downloaded the latest patch – not sure about ver7 but I think version 6 had a problem which had it giving "Not enough Memory (RAM)" messages.

I knew this was probably not the problem but with no apparent solution I thought I’d convince myself it was the problem..You know what..I heard on the net that even version 7 hangs a lot..I don’t know how to solve this problem so I just uninstalled the PS with all its plug-ins…guess I’ll have to find an alternative. thanks again Haytham
