Hello !

I have noticed two abnormal behaviors, which may be due to Photoshop : – there is no way I can instruct Windows Explorer (XP – SP2) to open .jpg files with Photoshop : Photoshop is not suggested as a possible choice, and I cannot force the Explorer to use it : when I select photoshop.exe, that option is not shown in the list of "possible" software… – When I scan a slide, using Vuescan, I tell Vuescan to use Photoshop as a viewer, but Photoshop says the file format is incorrect. Yet, I have no problem to open the picture file from Photoshop… And Erik Krause says this may be due to a bug in Photoshop…

I have tried removing the Photoshop Preference file, and rebuilding it. No way.

Does anybody have an idea ? Thanks !

option is not shown in the list of "possible" software…

What about browsing to and selecting Photoshop? Browse… button under ‘possible’ list.

Else explorer-tools-folder options-file types – edit jpg/jpe/jpeg to open with PS, or just delete existing associations and you’ll be prompted with the Open With dialog… Browse….

I tried that, of course. But, when I click on photoshop.exe, I go back to the list, and PS is not even there…

Same thing…

It still reads like an incomplete install to me

Do you mean I should remove PS, and install again ?

When it is easy to advise remotely I don’t mind making a positive contribution in the hope that it helps one or many

For something like this there are quite a few variables that need to be eliminated first

Try a call to Adobe support? Call in an experienced and/or qualified computer system bod?

I dunno m8 – when the complexity increases it needs a bit more hands on diagnosis

I s’pose that is just a long way to say: geez – I’m stumped !

Sounds good – uninstall, make sure no files visibly left, re-install. Prefs will probably remain though…

I tried the re-install : it solved the problem of opening .jpg and .tif files with Photoshop, which is great, but still did not solve opening automatically files generated by Vuescan…

Thanks all for your help !

NO! That’s not the way to go. First remove prefs. If that doesn’t fix it, then clean the registry. CCleaner might help if you use it carefully.

I notice you have Service pack 2 installed! is it possible there is a connection there?
I have heard that some problems have been experienced, which is why I have not taken the plunge yet myself!

After reading the replies, I think my biggest contribution can be to say that with me it works fine. Indeed, th eone computer where I could not choose photoshop as ‘open with’ indeed after browsing to it that became a steady option. So it is definitely not a photoshop bug. Guess a reinstall would be the safest.

Oh well, I got other ‘bugs’ in other software that I still don’t understand or haven’t solved.
