Hello, this have been a very sad day for me. I was making a walpaper that took me an hour and I just got done with it
I was about to save it, but my older brother had to use the computer. So then i had to lay down, then i accendtly slept! Then my father wanted to use the phone (we have 1 line) and then he just hit the button on the CPU Box (the way u turn pc’s on) because he doesnt know anything about computers. Then i just woke up couple hours ago, my computer is still open and every file still open except the internet. Anyway, i see photoshop, its telling me to save the walpaper, i saved it as .PSD. Now i restart my PC, and i open the PSD file, its all messed up. It shows a lil thumbnail on my desktop (which was where i saved the file) and the thumbnail is good quailty, but then inside photoshop, all u see is like lines and stuff. Is there anyway to fix this. I also told my friend to try it, it did the same for him. I use Windows XP PRO, and dont worry, i just got my new pc and its really fast and good! I use Photoshop 7 and i guess thats all i gotta say… Please help if u can ! 🙁

Nope. You can almost never revive a PSD file that has been trashed. I am somewhat amazed that yours even opened.

Chances are your file is corrupt and you will need to do it over again.

You can try opening the PSD in an image viewer like ACDSee or infranview (if compatibility mode was/is on). If it opens just save it to a new file. It won’t have layers anymore but it may save you some time over a complete redo.

Unfortunately you just had a lesson in file corruption. On the up side it only cost you an hour of your time and it might even be better when you redo it.

For the future, always save to more than one file. Programs can crash during a save on exit and you are left with nothing. It is not unusual for me to have filename-001 through filename-010 or more. When you are done make a backup of your final project file and you can delete the other files that you don’t need.

Also save often, unless you are working on a very large file that takes a while to save. If it is a large file a trick I use is to save the image and background once and then delete the background layer (if it is complex and you aren’t changing it as you work) on subsequent saves and just undo the layer delete after it is saved. The file will be much smaller and take a lot less time to save. When you are done save the entire file but if something happens as you work all you need to do is open the last save and reinsert the background.
