Hi, I’m a complete amateur when it comes to Photoshop and this is probably basic stuff to most of you but I’m having trouble with this :

when working with silkscreen you use sheets (not sure if this is the right word, I’m Dutch); for every colour another transparant film with the design in black lightblocking ink.
I’d like to work like that in Photoshop too, so for instance I open a photograph and with adjustments->threshold I turn this into a black and white picture.

Then I’d like to be able to just turn the white bits transparant and I’d like to be able to change the black bits into any colour I choose, without painstaikingly selecting everything by hand.

Can someone please give me a step by step explanation how to go about this (since the help-file didn’t help me at all on this. Probably my fault, but I did try first)

The term in english would be "plates", from printing plates.

Change the image mode to RGB – then you can change the color using many adjustments, or you can make the image into a layer and change the blending mode to pass (or not) other image data.

I know I can make all kinds of colour-adjustments.
But how can I make the white bits transparant ("change the blending mode to pass (or not) other image data", change how ? change where ? which steps do I take ?)

I already said I’m an amateur.
Picture me : I’ve got a photograph simplified to black and white. Now which steps do I take to make the white transparant and be able to change the black parts into any colour ?

I tried a lot (also with blending options) but I can’t find it.

Change the image mode to multiply — where the layer is white, the background will show through.

under image->mode is no multiply (I’m trying this with Photoshop 7.0)only multichannel and that doesn’t do what I’m looking for.
I appreciate help, but I’m still getting nowhere.

I suspect that it must be something really simple that can be explained in a few steps. (I know how dumb I must look. I’ve seen people ask for the bloody obvious on audio-forums. But I really can’t find what I’m looking for)

Not the image mode, the layer blending mode.

This IS really simple.

The layer blending mode is a drop down box on the layers palette. It controls how the selected layer will blend with the other layer(s).
