Cannot see text in PS7

I have just had to reinstall PS7 due to hard disk crash. Now when I type some text I cannot see it. The problem occurs in any new document. The type colour is NOT set to white!

What is the point size set to??

Is the tpe tool set to outline mode (i.e. does the text tool appear as a dotted ‘T’)??
