A camera to photograph new smoke with the desired [lack of] background might be the easiest method. Could you upload a small version of the picture to a web site so we can see? I can’t tell from here if it’s thick, billowing smoke or thin, wispy smoke.

well in fact it’s hear 🙂 but I think it’s similar to smoke. I don’t have my own page but maybe I can post it to some graphics binary newsgroup?

resumiem populsku?

Post your image here

http://www.pixentral.com/index.php

Then pop the URL direct to your image in a message to this NG

It avoids binaries and lets everyone have a look at the source image

That’s good – I was wondering how to edit sound files in Photoshop 🙂

For hair, you may be able to use the extract filter to good effect, just zoom in a lot when you’re drawing the outline; the Smart Hilighting feature can help. Otherwise, you can use the pen tool to create a path and then ctrl-click on that path in the paths palette to make a selection of it.

The extract filter is much easier if it works for your picture. And [I find] this sort of thing is much easier with a pen tablet rather than a mouse.
