I’m using 7.0. I’ve been asked to close crop something, and to make sure I’m using the term right, I want to cut a person out of a background so that they can be inserted into a web page in .jpg format (ultimately). Now, I want no background at all. I plop the picture of the person onto the existing background and only the person can be seen ontop of the background, and no other.

My problem is I seem to be close cropping the person out of the background but just replacing the background with black, or white, or whatever my default background colour is at the time.

I’m a little confused on how to actually cut someone out of a picture and have no background what so ever so that when I plop them into another picture, nothing comes over but the person.

Halp!

Thank all.

PS I did some scanning around to try and find a similar topic but no luck. Either I don’t know how to search for past discussions about similar topics, or everyone in the world knows how to do this but me! 😉
I’m guessing most likely the previous, and probably the latter as well! 😉

You have my thanks in advance, responders.

Cheers

The term you are looking for is "close cutting". The best method for this would be creating a work path using the path drawing tools. Some may recommend the magic wand or some masking method, but if you want nice clean edges, a work path is your best bet. If you are not familar with the path drawing tools or making work paths, you should consult the help files to learn more about them.

I am betting someone will come along sooner or later with a good tutorial on work paths. For now, look in the PS help topics.

PS> If you are looking for a fast, one-step approach, there really isn’t one. Close-cutting takes time to master not to mention skill. Practice makes perfect!
