Problem with PATH

I have using PATH in PS 7 to cut of part of one picture to put into another document. But once I starting with pen tool the space behind every move to next anchor filling with blue. I then clicking on quick mask and that blue color disappearing. When finish, closing path starting another problem. I selecting make selection then tried to copy and paste onto second open file and what I get is only white silhouette of that part I of picture I cut off.
Please, can anyone explain me what is problem? Sorry about my poor English.

It sounds like you’re in shape layer mode instead of vector mask or path mode.

Check the options in the options bar.
