Hi,
The other day I came across an old diary written by a long gone great Aunt who used an old fashioned typewriter to write those memoirs. It contains a wealth of information for my extended family. My question is, is there any software available that can scan these pages and turn it into text that an be edited? The reason being that being frugal she wrote her memoirs to the very end of each line and used the full length of the paper. It would be great to make the text more legible and send it to interested family members via e-mail.
I know this is not exactly relevant to Photoshop, but I’ll use Photoshop as a last resort.

Thanks everyone,
NICK

Acanning into Acrobat,
depending on the type involved, can make it type – and searchable

Or you can purchase Finereader which will probably do the job as well and is cheaper than Acrobat (I’m assuming that the reader can’t do this).

What you want is Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. There’s lots available and many scanners have this capability. OmniPage is one of the most popular packages:

If you already have a scanner, check the CD that came with it. Many scanners include a basic Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program as part of their software package. My Microtek scanner came with OmniPage Limited Edition. It’s not fancy but it does what you want to do.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on how to make my great Aunt’s typed memories into a very legible document. I am now well on the way to finalise this project. How did I ever survive before finding all those helpful people in this newsgroup. Thanks. It is much appreciated.

Glad you got your answers. Regardless of what some might say about the Usenet, THIS is what was intended, back in the dark ages, when it was ARPANET.
