I just installed Photoshop 6.0 on my new computer running XP. Everytime I try to open a file I get a "Could not complete command because of a program error" and everything locks up. I’ve tried the knowledge base…forget that. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling…still have the same problem. Help!

Upgrade to 7.0 or CS … hate to say it but XP is different than 98ME which was around when 6.0 came out. The venders move their products forward meaning that 6.0 while tested on XP is most likely not being supported by Adobe any longer. Someone correct me if I am wrong here …

Nancy,

You could try closing all antivirus programs and anything else that is memory resident while installing.

Also, I think there is a patch for PS 6 so you might want to try downloading that and installing it before lauching Photoshop for the first time.

Other than that, I am at a loss.

Nancy,

and everything locks up<<

Do you mean the whole machine locks up or just Photoshop?

Can you still access Task Manager with CTRL+ALT+DEL?

If not, then you have a hardware or BIOS problem or a bad install of the O/S…..

If it is just Photoshop that locks up, try deleting the prefs file – Details in the FAQ at the top of this forum’s Topic List

Just Photoshop locks up. I can still access the Task Manager, and in fact use it to get out of Photoshop. The Task Manager shows that Photoshop is still running. I saw the FAQ on the prefs file…and couldn’t seem to locate the file. I tried using the search field with *.pref as the name of the file. There was no such file on the computer. I think I have downloaded any updates that are available, but will check again. Hope you guys have more ideas…

If any of you are using XP, where did you find the prefs file?

the file isn’t *.pref, it’s *.psp. also it’s a hidden file in a hidden folder. you may need to go into windows explorer and turn on view hidden and system files before you do your search. in xp it should be in a folder something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

and the file is called:

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Prefs.psp

Thanks for the information, however, I could not find a single file with the .psp extension which leads me to believe that there was a problem with the installation of the program. I will uninstall and reinstall making sure that all virus programs are disabled during the installation. I will let you know if it works.

As an update to this issue. I contacted Adobe and it was suggested that I do a selective startup (duh! I should have done that first!). Anyway, the conflicting program was "Themes" under Services. I have contacted Microsoft and will also contact Adobe to let them know the resolution of the issue in case anyone else has the same problem. Thanks for all your help!
