I need some help! I know how to make transparent GIFs but I’ve never done a transparent JPEG or TIF file.

That’s okay – neither has anyone else, really.

I need to be able to drop these
two pictuures over top of some large text but have the backgrounds of both pictures be transparent so that ONLY the fish shows. How can I do this in Photoshop 7 so that it’s useable in Corel 10?

Outline the fish with the pen tool, save the path, make it a clipping path, and save the pic as EPS.

Thanks much!!

You can have a transparent tiff; just create your document with transparency and check the box when saving. I don’t know what Corel will do with the file though. Many programs don’t support transparency in tif.

Jpegs cannot have transparency.

Corel works well with tiff files or psd files using transparency. However, if you are converting the corel draw files to a pdf, don’t use the corel built in pdf converter, there are glitches that cause distortion. Use acrobat 5.0.

You can have a transparent tiff; just create your document with transparency and check the box when saving.

Then have your prepress people send a very large bill when it doesn’t output correctly and they have to correct the situation.

I don’t know what Corel will
do with the file though. Many programs don’t support transparency in tif.

I don’t know of any that do – properly. Even the vaunted Indesign needs PSD format for the kind of transparency you’re talking about.

Jpegs cannot have transparency.

You can have a transparent tiff

Your printer must live in a comic book.

I regularly create ads in corel draw using tiffs and psd files with transparent layers.
I convert the cdr files to pdf’s and send them to rrdonnelly in Ky., two a week on average. They happen to be the largest publisher in the US. Never had a problem yet.
Personally I prefer to use pds files but I don’t avoid tiff files at all.

I generally save as .pdp files anymore to retain all the PS info.

I was not addressing output or printing issues, just stating that you can indeed save transparent tiffs.

Yes, I understood that. I was just living in a cartoon at the moment – one I drew. 🙁

Why not just use Photo-Paint since you need the object in Corel. Import the jpg. Use the magic wand
mask tool on the background, click the "similar" button, invert mask, float mask and save as a cpt. Import into
your Corel Draw drawing. A little extra work needed on the one with the blue background.

Because Photo-Paint is a real garbage program in comparison to Photoshop. Granted, most people prefer Illustrator to CorelDraw also, but the company I work for prefers and has licenced copies of Corel so that’s what I use.

But thanks to all for your efforts. I did manage to create a transparent TIF file by knocking out the background and turning it transparent. The files placed very nicely inside of Corel 10 and the label I was creating is off to the printer even as we speak 🙂
