I had an installation on WinXP running Photoshop 7 and several other progs like ACAD2002 and the whole office stuff.
NortonAV is scanning background and Mozilla is handling communication. This setup ran for a long time.

Since august or september I suffered sudden total losses, only when doing Photoshop.
The problem got worse evrey week, at last, I had a Crash after a few minutes after beginning photoshopin´.

I initially mirrored my HD and after the first used to crash after a few minutes after using Lasso or Text tool in Photoshop, I took the second HD and it worked a few weeks.

Then increasingly the entire System used to crash like crappy ol´ 95 allways when using photoshop with Lasso or Text tool.

Ever heared of this?
A known bug?

Is it PS-Win incompatibility (I never had a real satisfiing PS installation since the times of R3)?

Is it a Norton forced bug?

why can PS even crash XP?

I’ve have run Photoshop 7 on XP home and XP pro over the last couple of years with no problems. For what it is worth I have no Norton stuff.

Is it PS-Win incompatibility (I never had a real satisfiing PS installation since the times of R3)?

Is it a Norton forced bug?

why can PS even crash XP?

Probably not Norton. PS doesn’t crash XP, but a device or dieing mother board can. If you have a good diagnostics program I’d begin with the display-driver, then motherboard, then RAM.

If you’re seeing blue screens – look for a bad driver.
If you’re seeing shutdowns, lockups or reboots – you probably have bad hardware (most likely the RAM, then the motherboard).

Have you added any new plug-ins since August?? I added an 8bf plug-in which was only 50 kb and was supposed to allow B & W conversions and that crashed PS every time I ran a filter!! fortunately I was quickly able to isolate the problem.
or have you installed XP service pack 2 – I understand that this can cause problems in a minority of cases!

Hi tillman,
more than likely sounds like a hardware problem I had a similar problem it turn out to be the motherboard, found a replacement on Ebay. also make sure that Photoshop has enough memory allocated. I have a similar setup to yours, Norton system works, upgraded version of Photoshop going back to version 5, Mozilla firebox and about 60 programs on a Pentium 4 1.9 GHz with Win XP and SP2 loaded no problems.

A new Motherboard would mean a new setup?
I think so.
Mine is at about 1,5jears old and whenever I startup, it crashes XP after ca 5min, then rebooting and working stable for months (I only shutdown once a month, because once stable, I use the "boot-session" My dealer said its ok with this, XP does this sometimes.

If your dealer says that it’s common for XP to crash to the blue screen, then you might want to find a new dealer. He’s nutz.
