When I hold down the shift key then click, to start erasing in a straight line, the line always starts at the last place I used the eraser. Is there a way to turn that off, so that the line starts where I click? I’m using Photoshop CS 8.0 & Mac OS X.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank You

It’s a feature, not a bug. If you want to erase exactly horizontal or vertical lines, click first without moving the mouse, then press the shift key and move the mouse witht the key held down.
If you want to erase a straight line which is neiter exactly horizonal nor vertical, move the arrow to where erasing should start and klick once without moving the mouse. Release the mouse button, move to the endpoint of the straight line, hold down the shift key and click a second time, again without moving the mouse.
This behavior gives you the choice between erasing horizontal or vertical lines respectively or straight lines at any angle. Peter

try pressing the shift key *after* you’ve clicked where you want to begin the line/eraser

Yes, that is correct. That’s how it works.

Is there a way to turn that off, so that the line starts where I click?

To erase in a straight line, there are three steps.

Step 1: **WITHOUT** holding the SHIFT key, click where the line should start. Step 2; Hold down the SHIFT key.
Step 3: With the SHIFT key down, click where the line should end. —
