Why be a miser? Get her a 21 inch. I am assuming you are talking crt and not lcd.

Probably a matter of what you can find and afford… Sony’s are great but expensive, the Mitsubishi’s have similar technology in their tubes and are pretty awesome for the $. Strong blacks, sharp… Trinitron/Diamondtron aperture grille beats shadow mask technology in my opinion… Haven’t used Viewsonics, but they have a good rap in general.

If you get to try one out, check some text onscreen at the res and refresh rate she’ll be using it at (maybe 1280×1024 @ 85Hz). I have a Viewmaster which is softer at those settings than at 75Hz.

I have a ViewSonic UltraBrite A90f+. It seems to be a pretty good monitor although I had to return the first one since it did not function properly. The box it came in had been slightly crushed and it did something to the monitor but the one I traded for has worked for a year with not problems.

One thing about the A90f+ is the UltraBrite Mode. There is a button on the front of the monitor that changes the brightness of the monitor. I set the UltraBrite for use with Photoshop and then I can tone down the brightness for working on spreadsheets, word documents, etc. It’s a one touch button.

Photoshop really likes a bright monitor but I prefer one a little dimmer.

They don’t make the A90f+ any more but there is a newer version with three brightness settings. BestBuy has them for $250 with a $50 rebate so I’m waiting for the rebate to expire and see if they reduce the price to $200. Rebates suck.

You do a lot better buying refurbished/discontinued monitors direct from Viewsonic.

Those are the top of the line models and are far superior to the A line you can get at Best Buy. I’ve bought several refurbs from Viewsonic. Never had any trouble with them. One I’ve been using for 4 years.

Thanks for the web page. I’ll check it to see if one of the monitors you mention show up.

Your web page looks good! I used to have my own Tiger cat. Mistakingly I named him Killer and when he got lost I couldn’t call out his name in the large city I had moved to. Something about screaming Killer, Killer set the neighbors on edge. I never saw Killer again.

I have a ViewSonic PF775b that was a refurb – $99. (Also no longer made.) It runs at 1600×1200 @ 75 Hz. I love it! It’s great! I haven’t had a bit of trouble with it.

I use Adobe Gamma to calibrate it and my wedding photos print on my Epson R800 just like I want them to. It really doesn’t drift either.
