I am trying to create an Action for creating a contact sheet. A contact sheet is a sheet that displays all the pictures on a sheet in thumbnail form. The problem being that I am using a dummy folder for creating the action, and once I create the droplet, it keeps using the dummy folder when creating the contact sheet, no matter what folder I drop on the droplet.

So Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks In Advance.

Well, we *could* work through the issues, it’s reasonably simple, but first, have you tried using File|Automate|Contact Sheet II? It might make your life simpler.

Yes I am using that menu option in my action. I need this to be as automated as possible so that I can do more work in a day than I can do by creating the contact sheet, step by step.

For future reference, it’s better to post only ONCE so that everything is in one place.

Hosts: Please consider combining the following thread with this one:

To "fix" your droplet we’d have to know more about it. But consider this:

First as you know, when you use Contact Sheet II, all images in the folder you selected will be processed according to the Contact Sheet dialog. The result is a set of contact sheets, and the number of them is driven by the number of images to use, and your specifications in the Contact Sheet dialog.

The easiest way, is to avoid a droplet altogether. Simply run Contact Sheet II. When it’s finished you have multiple images open.

Then, create a Save As action, to save an image in a specific file format. Then run that Save As action with the batch dialog. It’s easier that way, and here’s why.

When you record the Contact Sheet action, all the parameters are passed to the action and are not individually change-able. It will always process the same folder – it’s hard coded into the action.

So doing it in two steps allows you greater control: Which folders are used for the source, and where you save the finished contact sheets.

So following along here, after your sheets have been created, record a Save As action. Then toggle the dialog to OFF; that’s the little square next to the Save As action name.

Then you are ready to batch save. File|Automate Batch.

Action to run = Save As JPG (for example)
Source = Open Images
Destination = Folder
Choose = Select the folder you want to put them in
Override action "Save As" commands = CHECKED

Optionally enter in a naming convention and hit go. Each image will be saved to your destination directory in the file format specified by the Save As action, and then close.

Peace,
Tony

I am unable to "toggle the dialog to off". It is grayed out, and I can not change that option. Any insight into this would help. Thank you.

There’s a little box to the left of that – is it checked? If not, check it. If it is, then post back and I’ll have a look at your ATN file.

Well the box with the little check mark indicates that is for toggling the item on/off. The one to the right of it indicates that it is for toggling the dialog on/off. That option is grayed out on my save as action. So I can not do anything with it. The litle check mark I do not believe is the one I should be changing. Because if you put your cursor over the check mark it will say "Toggle Item On/Off", but if you put your cursor over the other box it says: "Toggle Dialog On/Off". Let me know if you figure this out.

Black checkmark should be on, Dialog should be OFF. You didn’t specify it’s condition when I asked if it was on or not. If the Toggle Item On/Off box (the checkmark) is ON, and your dialog is grayed out, send your action to me.

Create a new Action Set, and copy the action to that new set (Duplicate action, from the menu in the actions pallet). Save it to your HD, then send it to: edgecomp at ix dot netcom dot com.

I’ll have a look and post results here.

LightningWolf,

I looked at your action. It’s simple. You are choosing Save, not Save As. Also, you DO NOT need a Save Step in your action, becaue the Batch Dialog is going to do that.

Do this. Open a dummy file. Start recording an action. Call it Save As JPG (assuming that’s the format you want, if you want it as a PSD, then Save As PSD).

File|Save As..

Choose the file format you want to save in and carry it all the way through actually saving the file. Stop recording.

Now, toggle the dialog to OFF.

Now, go to your contact sheet action in the action pallet, and double click on Batch. That will trigger recording again, only overwriting your current settings. Set the Action to run to be the Save As action you just created, make all your other settings what we talked about, and hit GO. The new settings will be recorded and you will batch save and close these files.

Peace,
Tony
