Hello, I just reformated yesterday and performed a clean install of the premium suite (after all drivers were updated, xp was updated, etc.). Installations seemed to go fine and now I am just digging into photoshop for the first time.

I opened a 45 meg .psd file that was created in PS 7. I was asked to update text? Ok.

Then i started messing around with the layers a bit. I found that I was unable to apply multiple edits with any tool once i had left that tool. No real consistent pattern yet, seems like sometimes a "threshold" of edits was reached, or sometimes just changing from one tool to another and back again – and then the tool button would work on the toolbar, the bounding box would show up for the layer, but the tool would not edit (i.e. move layer, free transform) and only arrow cursor would show.

I have a feeling this has something to do with the relationship between the PS7 file and PS CS because i am unable to reproduce this behavior in any new files. The .psd is not not protected in any way. If i shut down PS CS and reopen the .psd I am able to do a few more edits – then no go.

Other psd files are responding similarly, but with a bit more sense. I am getting layer locked dialogs. Although i can not see where the layer is locked, if I double click on the layer it warns me that the layout may change if i edit.. duh. Then it edits without a hitch.

Is there some kind of default that locks psd files opened from previous versions? The file i mentioned at the beginning of this post does not tell me that anything is locked – seems more like the locking process is screwing up the file.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Bob
