Running CS on a dual Xeon with 4 GB of RAM and Windows XP Pro. Upgraded from version 7.01.

When CS starts, it takes about 2 minutes to scan for plugins, then generates a series of error messages:

"Application failed to start because PDFL50.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem."

"Application failed to start because EToolbox.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem."

"Application failed to start because vfzcore.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem."

"Could not load the MMXCore Routines because it does not work with this version of Photoshop."

The first two messages repeat several times, then CS runs, but nowhere as zippy as previous versions.

Do a forum search for "PDFL50" without the quotes. Someone just addressed this.

sounds like you just copied all your plugins from 7 to cs. don’t do that. uninstall cs. then reinstall. then reinstall the plugins manually.

tip: rather than installing the plugins to the photoshop\plugins folder, create a completely seperate folder and call it something like GerrysPlugins. Then point to that folder from within ps7 (if you keep it) and cs by using the "secondary plug-in location" in the prefrences. benifits, one installation of all plugins. reinstallation of plugins not needed when upgrading. multiple programs can share the plugs.

Actually, you just need to make sure that you copy the DLLs from PS 7’s main folder to PS CS’s main folder. Worked for me.

Gerry,

EToolbox.dll is associated with one or more Extensis plug-ins that you have installed. If you copied your plug-ins directory from PS7 to PSCS, then you missed copying over EToolbox.dll because it resides at the root level of the Photoshop installation, <install path>\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0. You should be able to copy it from there to the PSCS installation path and get rid of at least that one error.

The last error about the MMX core routines means that PS CS is seeing the older PS7 MMXCore plug-in. As Dave mentioned, the best way to handle using plug-ins for multiple versions of Photoshop is to reference a secondary folder in your preferences, where that folder contains only 3rd-party plug-ins. That way you avoid the risk of conflicts between native Photoshop plug-ins.

The PS readme also warns against identifying the PS 7 Plug-ins folder as a second plugin folder because the names have not changed. That would cause a conflict.

However, you should be able to copy any NON-Photoshop plugins (AutoFX, KPT, ASF, etc.) to the CS Plugins directory without any problems. I did that and it works fine.
