EPS Parser Stopped Working in Photoshop 7.0a

I’ve got a weird one here. I have a computer running Photoshop 7.0a. It used to have no problems opening and parsing EPS files created by AutoCAD R2000. Then one day, it stopped working, even on files that it had previously had no problems with.

Now, this is not the "unable to parse this file" problem. You go Open, select the EPS file you want to open, and up comes the parser window specifying how large the image will be and the dpi setting. At this point, you hit OK. At the bottom of Photoshop you see the message that the file is being parsed. But the parsing operation happens far too quickly. A couple of seconds at most when it used to take a minute or more.

Once the parsing finishes, the image opens, but it’s blank. Nothing but transparent background. There should be lots and lots of linework.

I’ve re-installed the software twice. It’s still doing this for EPS files.

Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem?

Tyy deleting your prefs file – details in FAQ at the top of this forum’s Topic List (a re-istall wouldn’t touch the prefs file)

Just deleted the Photoshop preferences file as per the instructions in the FAQ. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

Anyone have any other suggestions.

Sounds like your problem is stemming from the creation of the .eps file, double check the settings in acad, or have someone else rip the file from a different machine.

I have the same problem.

I don’t think the problem is the creation of the EPS file — because EPS files from various different sources open as "blank" files. Same thing happens when using the "Place" command.

Has anyone found a solution?

If you have Illustrator, try opening the EPS in that application.

If you have the full Acrobat product you could also try distilling the EPS to a PDF.

Does distilling the EPS to PDF preserve transparency settings?

It should do, Glen

Thanks, Len.

Transparency is indeed preserved.

This workaround does the trick — it just adds a few steps to the process. I hope somebody else can post a solution to this bug!

Um, maybe a stupid question, but have you tried updating to 7.0.1?

Phillip,

this method failed never, so far:
Distill AutoCad directly, or write as PostScript to file and distill then, using Acrobat Distiller PostScript Driver.
AutoCad EPS are notoriously buggy.

(the only remaining issue is that AutoCad defines colors by RGB which distributes black to all plates CMYK, if used for offset).

I’ having the same problem you are. I can’t open eps files that use to work fine before (ei. logos). I’ve tried re-installing, deleting prefs… Nothing seems to get this feature back for me. I Know I can instead use pdf files but I need to have the ability of opening eps files as well. Is it a bug that they will fix? is it a conflict with another application? If some of us, users, are having the same crucial problem I am sure they are aware of it… Please can some one help???
