Ok I know there is one little thing I’m missing to get what I want here. I’m hoping someone can point that little thing out for me.

Lets say I just have text in 800×600 file. I put a drop shadow on it with the layer style effect. Now, I need to add an alpha channel so that the text and shadow punch through in another program. (I need to add the alpha because I will be saving the end results as a targa file)
To make my alpha I would ctrl+click my text layer and save my selection and my alpha would be in the channel palette. Yet, the shadow (or anything else done by the Layer Style effect) won’t load into the selection by ctrl+clicking.

The question is how do get the layer styles in a selection as well? I don’t want to flatten the layer in case things might have to change later on. Duplicating it can take time from the work flow. Is there a way to load the layer style to your selection in a non-destructive and efficient way? When I have to make 30 different files like this being destructive or replicating can slow down your work flow. There has to be an easy way to do this right?

I hope I gave enough info for you all to help out. I’ll go into more detail if need be. Thanks.

Set up an action to do the steps then you can perform them as many times as you like

Your going to have to rasterise that drop shadow to get it into the alpha at some point.

Many ways, you can use the composite (control option tilde) to make your alpha. Or this way Β– I would do it like thisΒ…

Β• Duplicate the text layer
Β• Merge this duplicated kayer with a blank layer below it to rasterise the layer and effect together
Β• Load it as a selectiion
Β• Make channel
Β• Delete the rasterised layer

You now have the original text layer plus the alpha channel you want. These steps can all be made into an action very easily
