I am trying to create a very small image in PhotoShop 5.0. My purpose is to use the image of a capital letter as a link in an Adobe Go-Live web page. The webpage is very content oriented and consists primarily of long lists of links to PDF files in size 12 font(all forms). Next to the links to the PDF files, we want to add links to other PDF files (guidelines & policies). We want these links to stand out so we have decided to create a purple capital letter P linking to corresponding policy and green capital letter G linking to corresponding guideline. If we do this directly in the text box in Adobe Go-Live, when we add the property to make it link, it automatically turn the P’s & G’s to blue with underline. So I decided to create a photoshop image of a purple P and green G and make that the link in Adobe Go-Live and it works.

My problem is that I cannot create the PhotoShop image small enough. The smallest image size I can create with a size 12 font letter still visible is .156 x .156 inches. The problem is that the crop tool is not enabled. And when I reduce the size of the image size, it also reduces the size of the letters. And the letters kind of float to the upper-right corner of the image and increases the spacing on my web page in between lines. Is there a buffer in the image size that I can reduce or omit? Why can’t I crop the image? Why can’t I make the image smaller and center it on the image? When I make the image smaller, either it reduces the size of the image alltogether OR all I see is the bottom part of the letter.

I appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

Hi Lillian,
Forgive me if I’m being a bit slow but I’m struggling to understand what you’re asking here. Let me see if I’ve got it right.
You’ve made an image 11 pixels square (that’s 0.156 inches at 72ppi). How small do you want to make it? If you make it much smaller your users won’t be able to tell what it is, it’ll just look like a blob! With only 11 pixels it’s difficult to centre something that’s only 6 pixels wide (the width of a 12pt "p"). I don’t know about your crop tool, do you have any presets set for it? Are you using image size or canvas size? So I’m not sure whether you’re after something unrealistic or whether I’m misunderstanding you!

Another way round this is to use styles to keep your visited links purple. You can do this with css code and there are plenty of resources for this on the web. That means you won’t have to do these things in Photoshop at all!

Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks for responding. I did not create the web page and have inherited updating it. <http://www.musc.edu/cce/ORDFRMS/>
The font in Adobe GoLive is referred to as size 1 and appears to be equal to font size 9. I agree that this writing is too small but I believe the creator of the site, who is my supervisor would take my suggestion as an insult. So I am trying to come up with a solution to add noticeable links in a way that does not offend my boss.

I am trying to create a jpg image that can be inserted from PhotoShop into Adobe GoLive as a smart object. Why? Because if I just add links next to the already existing links, they would just blend in because the writing on the page is already so small. So I want to add a different color letter denoting links to policies & guidelines so they will stand out (and will not change color after clicking on them). But by inserting the smallest object in Adobe GoLive into the text object, the margins on the PhotoShop image extend beyond the size for a font size 10 line so it spaces the lines apart further. What I want is a font size 12 or smaller capital letter saved as a jpg when inserted, does not change the spacing in the text box. So the image has to be small enough to not displace the spacing but large enough to be readable. When I create this in PhotoShop, it looks like I could crop extra blank space around the capital letter, but when I do it either decreases the entire size of the letter (which I don’t want to be any smaller) OR it makes the image size smaller, about the size I want, but the letter is in the upperright hand corner of the image size and you can’t see the whole letter. So there is room to cut off extra space, but the crop tool is not enabled. And when I do resize, it cuts off the visibility of the letter. Does this make sense?? I appreciate the help!
Thanks again,
Lillian
