Changing color photo to duotone

Is there a quickie way (for a newbie)to change an ordinary color photo (PSD) to a duotone? Want to print a sunrise scene in black and red ink. . .

Image mode>grayscale then image>mode>duotone. Select duotone and pick your inks.

However if you want a predominance of red where you see red in the picture, this will not work.

Try this:

Target the green channel, select all and copy (or copy the magenta channel if you are starting with CMYK).

Open a new CMYK file, and add a spot color channel of the appropriate PMS color and paste into that channel.

Then back on the original file, convert to grayscale, select all, and copy.

On your new file target the black channel, and paste.

Now you can play with curves for each channel until it looks like you want (a little guess work here… this file mode does not provide the best preview color-wise).

Keep the blank C M & Y channels, and save as a DSC2.
