I’ve seen NiMH batts with mah ranging from 1500-2100. I assume bigger is better, but how noticable is it, what is it in the first palce 🙂

Robert,

"mAh" is "milli-ampere hours", a common way to define the capacity of a battery. Since these battery ratings exceed 1000, it is perhaps easier yet to forget about Millie (bad joke) and divide 1000 into the value.

So, what we have here are batteries capable of delivering 1.5 to 2.1 Amps of current for a one hour time period. If you have a high drain device such as a digital camera, then the higher the capacity rating on a battery, the longer it should be able to operate the camera.

I’m sure the reliability of the ratings can vary with the quality of the battery, if my experience is any indication. Overall I’d say I’ve seen the best results from Everready 2000mAh NiMH batteries. I’ve used Lenmar, iPower, Kodak, Panasonic, Sanyo, and Maha Powerex. The Lenmar noMemPro batteries seem a good value not lasting perhaps quite as long as iPower, Maha, or Everready but much less expensive. I bought a 10-pk of the Lenmar AA batteries at Fry’s for around $18, while the Powerex costs $16 for a 4-pk from Thomas Distributing ( <http://www.nimhbattery.com> ). I do really like the Maha MH-C401FS charger however…fast charging in 100 min. or slow charge (better battery life) in 5 hours. Everready 2000mAh batteries seem as good to me as the Powerex and are locally available for around the same price, if not a little cheaper.

That’s more info than you asked for, but hopefully useful.

Regards,

Daryl

Robert,

Generally, I’d not knock Kodak’s quality, but the Kodak 1400mAh batteries I had didn’t seem up to par with the other brands mentioned. While I still use them in devices of less concern than a camera, such as penlights, I feel they still haven’t lasted quite as long as the Sanyo or Panasonic batteries that I had in the 1600mAh rating. Admittely, that’s a slightly higher rating but I’d not have expected much difference when the reality is that the Kodak batteries just seemed to give out noticeably sooner. At the very least I would discourage you from spending $19 on them when even what I referred to as the "expensive" Powerex at $16 are probably every bit as good. Thomas Distributing is a great resource for batteries, and I’d recommend purchasing from them over Amazon. I strongly recommend a good charger and even suggest that might’ve been the culprit in some of my batteries not holding up as well as I’d have expected. Of the various chargers I’ve had over the years, the Maha and an older Panasonic 5-hour charger seem to give the best quality charge (longest lasting), and maybe the Olympus charger that came with my C5050Z digital camera also. That reminds me too…my Olympus 1700mAh batteries seem to be among the best I’ve got as well.

Yeah Tony, that’s me…always brief in reply. Ha!

Here’s a great battery comparison test that ranks the Maha Powerex 2200mAh at the top of the list…I think mine are the 2000mAh ones. <http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.HTM>

And here’s a charger/battery combo I’d recommend…the 2nd item in the list: <http://thomas-distributing.com/mhc401fs.htm>

Best I’ve found are Toshiba brand — 48 in a box for about $10. from BJ’s Club stores. They last very good in my GPS.
