I am a user in Hong Kong and I am using PS from ver 6 to now.

I am a little bit disappointed about Photoshop CS. It is seems that PS CS cannot support most of my current chinese characters which are working fine in PS7. By the way, the default Chinese characters in Windows XP Professional is supported.

Can any one help me to have a porper setting in order to use all of my current double byte characters (Chinese).

Many thanks.

Photoshop CS does support Chinese, quite well.

Check the font that you’re using, and the IME (which should be the Windows IME).

Photoshop supports the full GB18030 character set. Make sure you are using the right font. And, like Chris says, using one of the 2k/XP provided IMEs.

I have also tried, most of the chinese font family doesn’t work for photoshop and illustrator CS, and I am already using the default IME of win2k/XP. I’ve called the customer support with no solution.

even the mac version of photoshop CS, as i heard the same problem occurs. some of the chinese font family doesn’t work.

only few font families and the default font sets of osx and win2k/xp works fine. so what is going on? there is no point that we are buying a product that we cannot type our mother language.

Try using higher quality fonts. No, really. Some of the fonts out there have incorrect bounding boxes, bad metrics, and are trying to play fancy encoding tricks. Photoshop doesn’t implement a per-glyph backup scheme, so if the font is missing glyphs, they just don’t appear. Look at the font in Character Map to see what glyphs a font actually contains.

Photoshop CS has no problem working with Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) characters as long as the fonts supplied are of good working order. It’s Unicode surrogate aware and GB18030 compliant.

those fonts that now not working for photoshop cs are products of 3 of the biggest fonts factory in asia, so what you mean is, we have to give up all the font family that we have as they are low-ended and wait for some high-ended fonts release? those fonts were working fine all the way from photoshop 2.0 to 7.0, and those font-families are the ONLY font-families that we can choose for traditional/simplified chinese, i really doubt if we can find any "HIGH-QUALITY" chinese fonts.

You still haven’t said where the fots are from, and where I might get a hold of them for testing.

Unless you tell us what fon’ts you are using, we can do anything.

And it still sounds like you have bad fonts (especially if the ones that come with XP are working).

Here is one of the biggest fonts factory in Taiwan:

I think there are many people in Taiwan use their fonts, but it cannot be displayed well in Photoshop&Illustrator CS.

Again, it’s almost certainly their fonts – Photoshop is Unicode 3.2 compliant, so the fonts need appropriate Unicode mapping tables. Also, if the fonts aren’t being delivered in OpenType format, there are a number of issues that could come up.

just wondering does PS CS supports unicode 3.0? since the new fonts from <http://www.dynacw.com/> r using unicode 3.0? if yes, then i am going to buy the new fonts from them and try..

Yes, Photoshop CS supports Unicode 3.2. If the font comes with a Unicode table, it will work fine with Photoshop. The problems we’re seeing are with older TrueType fonts that don’t have Unicode mapping tables, just platform-encoded mapping tables.

One more question for Traditional Chinese.
Will Adobe release Chinese version for Photoshop CS. There is Chinese version for Photoshop 7. I am going to buy Photoshop CS and perfer Chinese version. So, do I need to wait longer for the Chinese version launched? Is Adobe going to release the Chinese version or it will never out?
Thanks.

There is a Chinese version of Photoshop 7, and there will be a Chinese version of Photoshop CS soon. Actually, we have separate Traditional and Simplified versions, but they will both be able to handle the older Type 1 Chinese fonts correctly.
