I couldnt find help with this anywhere so I have no idea if anyone else has this problem, but my the PSD icon changes to the icons of newly installed software on my computer or freshly opened files, such as an MPG. For instance if I had a .psd file on my desktop, then installed Microsoft Visual Studio, the icon of that .psd file is more than likely to change to the icon of a visual studio file or of the Visual Studio .exe file. Please help!

Ownership of files (and hence acquiring the icons) is usually an option in installation. If you take a default install, then most programs will take ownership of any file that they understand. In a good custom installation, you will be given a window where you can select which ones to use.

For instance, I have left jpg and gif as files for the default windows viewer, which loads in less than a second. Thus I can double click to see what is in an image without waiting for PS to open. Someone who has PS open all the time, however, would probably have it own the files.

If a nasty install takes over files that you don’t want, you can recover then without reinstalling PS. Check the FAQs … I’m pretty sure it is in there.

The PSD icon seems particularly vulnerable to being hijacked. A possible solution may be to increase your icon cache. The easiest way to do this is to download Xsetup.

ty Ho I think you may have solved my problem. As for Don, I was meaning that the .psd icon becomes the icon of other programs and files.
