Has anyone ever used this book? I have Photoshop 7.0, and never used a previous version, so I bought the book. First, it says that you should restore preferences to the default settings before each lesson. To do this, press and hold shift+alt+control immediately after launching Photoshop. When message appears, click Yes to delete the existing preferences file. I’ve done this about a dozen times, and no message ever appears.
Then, lesson 2 is about using the file browser. It says after you’ve selected and image, you can either double click it or press enter to open the image in a Photoshop image window. When I have an image selected, and press enter, it highlights the image name to rename it.
Am I really doing something stupid, or are these Photoshop flaws?

Not something stupid. It is a bit of a trick to delete the preferences. You have to coordinate yourself to hit the three keys within a second of launching, or it is too late. (Fast computers make this especially hard, taking the load procedure past the point very quickly.)

I think there is a FAQ in the forum that also decribes how to find the preferences file, and it can be safely deleted, which does the same thing as the boot trick. The problem is in finding the file, because it is in different locations in different Windows versions, and newer versions of windows hide system files of this type by default.

I can’t help you on chapter 2, since there was no file browser back in the days I used the CIB lessons.

Regan,

I’m an intermediate "newbie" so take my words lightly.

I think when CIAB talks about resetting the preferences before each lesson, it is talking about the classroom environment where lots of people are working on the same computers and they want to be sure you have the "default" palettes etc. working so as not to confuse you.

So, I wouldn’t worry too much about that if you are the only one working with the computer.

As for the file browser rename thing you are experiencing–not sure what could be happening, because the enter or double click of the image works fine for me. Again, I wouldn’t spend too much time on that. The file browser is very useful for viewing multiple images in a file etc. but don’t get frustrated trying to figure it out at this point.

Photoshop is a very complex program and I really benefited from taking a class at my local junior college as well as the great wealth of information found in these forums.

It’s a long but very rewarding road to learning ps.

Good luck and we’re here to help.

Regan,

I am not sure why, but if you use the enter key that is on the main keyboard (above the shift key) it opens the image. If I use the enter key on the number pad it wants to rename file. Never tried it before, so we both learn.
