Hello, I just upgraded from PS Elememts 2, to PS7. I was very comfortable with Elements and the way it was layed out, only to find that PS7 toolbars are quite different. Namely, the "open file, browse for file, open new blank document and move forward / backward keys" are no where to be found. I’m hoping that I don’t have a preference set correctly, but after going through the FAQ’s, I still can’t find an answer.
Can someone help me out please? It’s no fun clicking and scrolling for the things that used to have quick links!
(Windows XP home)
Thanks a bunch in advance.

Dan,

While PS Elements does offer a few buttons in their user interface, that has never been the case with Photoshop. At this point in time, your best bet is to become familiar with the keyboard shortcuts if you do not want to use the menus for accessing such commands. The only other alternative is to purchase Extensis PhotoTools which is rather pricey at $150 given that most of its features are pretty-well replaced by Photoshop’s enhancements. However, one of the features in PhotoTools that Extensis ultimately removed when they felt it no longer cost-productive to maintain, was a component called PhotoBars that provides a customizable toolbar interface for Photoshop. For Windows only, I took it upon myself to update the Photobars and re-introduce them via a supplement that I provide for a small fee. I think PhotoBars is a great feature to have, but I find it hard to justify at the price still charged for the full PhotoTools package. Unfortunately, there are some key files that support the entire package which are also required by PhotoBars, so you can’t have PhotoBars without PhotoTools.

If you’d like to see what my Photobars supplement looks like for PS6 and PS7, an illustration at my website depicts all toolbars enabled (far more than is normal! ha!). The page is <http://jazzdiver.com/photoshop/photobars.htm>

I agree with Daryl… your experience will be enhanced (after a bit of a learning curve) if you learn a few shortcuts.

CTRL + O = open document
CTRL + N = open New doc
CTRL + S = save document
CTRL + W = close document
CTRL + C = Copy
CTRL + V = paste
CTRL + A = select all
CTRL + X = undo

These are a few to start… if you begin using them consistently and resist using the mouse to perform these commands they will become second nature… and the nice thing is that most will work across applications.

Thanks for replies. At least I feel a little better about it actually not being an option and I couldn’t find it!
I’ll start a cheat sheet for the short cuts and learn ’em! Thanks again.

If you bought the retail version of Photoshop 7, there should’ve been a Quick Reference Card in the box showing almost all of the shortcuts. It’s also available on the CD as a PDF file.

During every Photoshop session, force yourself to learn a few new keyboard shortcuts, and in no time at all you’ll be flying through them.

Prov,

make it easy on yourself! A PS user, Trevor Morris, has taken the time to write down ALL of the shortcuts for us all. You can download the pdf file here <http://user.fundy.net/morris/redirect.html?photoshop1.shtml>

Help! I’m a novice, and I’m finding numerous mentions of the "Quick Reference Guide" and the Quick Reference Card". I received Photoshop Elements 2.0 bundled with my camera, and don’t have a clue how to find these creatures. Do they exist? How do I get there? Please take pity on an idiot and be specific.

Not an idiot at all. Best recommendation is for you to go to the Elements Forum and post your question there.

I don’t know that a bundle would come with complete documentation, but it might <shrug>.

Peace,
Tony
