I’ve run into a problem opening (or viewing) .jpegs and .psds in any program other than Photoshop. I can view or modify them, but when I attempt to use them elsewhere (Pagemaker, Corel or on a website), I get a message saying the file is corrupt, there’s a disk error on the CD, or (in PageMaker)"Cannot place this file, file contains invalid data, 8601:29766".

Can anyone help me? I can’t even pay Adobe for phone support on this product.

Thanks in advance!

Christina,

If you have another graphics program (Paint Shop Pro, etc.) you might want to try opening your JPG or PSD in it first and then re-save the image from that program for use in Corel, PageMaker, etc. Also, you might want to try saving the image as a BMP from your Photoshop 5. The BMP format has fewer variants and is more likely to work directly from Photoshop 5.

Now might be a good time to purchase an upgrade from your Photoshop 5 to Photoshop 7. Some of those Photoshop 7 upgrades are still available. I recently got one, although I am keeping Photoshop 5 on my system because some of my plug-ins work only with PS5. That will give you Photoshop 7 and qualify you for a free upgrade to Photoshop CS.

Christina,

I get a message saying the file is corrupt, there’s a disk error on the
CD<<

Can we assume from that that you are writing the files to CD? Are you ‘paket writing’ the CD in UDF format (just saving directly to the CD-RW) or are you writing the whle CD at once in ISO 9660 or Joliet format? (If the former, don’t!)

What happens if you save the file to your HDD? Can you then Place them in PM or open jpgs in a web browser?

I am interested in this question, too. I am using Photoshop 7.0 and Pagemaker 7.0.1 and I am receiving the same error message as Christina, but only for jpg files. I can save as a tif, bmp, gif or other formats and I have no problem placing the file into Pagemaker. I did not experience this problem with Photoshop 6.x. I can import other jpg files (e.g. those downloaded from the web or imported from a digital camera) without any trouble into Pagemaker. Any ideas — suggestions.

Erik,

Turn off the Thumbnails option when saving as JPG

Thanks Len. I assume you mean the thumbnails box at the bottom of the save as dialog box. If so, this thumbnails box is checked (and shaded), so I turned it off by using editing preferences, file handling, image previews — and choosing "never save." That shuts off the thumbnails box on the "save as" dialog box. But I still get the same error message when trying to place in PMaker. Am I switching off the wrong box. If so, where do I go to get the right one?

The other thing that will prevent JPG’s from being placed in PM is if they are saved as Progressive – make sure they are baseline (standard).
