I have an application where I need to operate on images that are ~5,000 by 46,000 pixels. I like Photoshop functionality, but the 30,000 pixel limit is really killing me. Does anyone know if there is a way areound it??

if you bought it after (I think this is the date) 9/30/03, you’re entitled to a free upgrade to CS. Call Adobe Customer support.

While we’re on the subject of the .PSB format, the new PS format for more than 30,000 pixels, what can you actually do with these images?

I get that you can only open them in PS. Can they be placed in ID for printing? I would bet the ranch that Quack is right out. What types of rips could even handle a mega-image? Would doing the entire layout including type be the way to go and print out of PS? Or would flattening, and cutting up the image into smaller chunks to be put back together in a layout be the best workflow.

Dave, Not sure of the cutoff date. . .generally it’s if you bought the previous version within 30 days of the announce, you get a free upgrade + shipping & CD. If you buy it after the announce, you should get a free upgrade assuming you register the previous version. But the whole CS thingie has complicated the upgrade process.

John, there are plenty of devices that can produce over 30K images but in the past, Photoshop couldn’t even open then. Now it can and while you are still limited in what you can do with them (print commands are greyed out) at least you can re-purpose them. There are 3rd party rips that can indeed take big dimension tiffs and rip them so you could bring in a large PSB, size for output and save out as tiff (as long as the file was under 4 gigs) and print them with some rips.

In the past since Photoshop had a 30K limit there wasn’t much demand for using anything over 30K. Now that that has changed, more people will use it and thus more 3rd party solutions will be built. It’s a chicken & egg thing.

🙂
