why won’t the filters work when using 16 bit color as opposed to the filters working when using 8 bit color? does anybody know what I am talking about? it deals with the options when you first create a new document?

In PS there are a limited number of things you can do with 16 bit mode images. With PS CS this limitation was eased [compared with PS 7], but not removed. I believe some filters work, but not all.

Thanks I thought something was wrong… What is the difference, in short, between 8 bit and 16 bit?

The difference is 8 bits, of course. :-))

With 16 bit you have a much greater range of levels to work with. An image that might end up saturated by black or white in 8 bit may still be manipulated in 16 bit. At some point you need to convert to 8 bit, if only for printing.

I am sure other posters will be able to give you more input.

Not all of the filters work in 16 bit/channel mode yet. It takes time to rewrite them.
