Adobe Gamma is for CRT displays only.

well then do you have any idea why a photograph looks as if it is the correct color on my monitor but when i print it on an HP 2110 all-in-one scanner/printer it turns all the blue colors some kind of funky aqua…if i adjust the color manually it just does not look real really appreciate your help leigh

Is there an equivalent way of correcting laptop screens?

Getting exact colour fidelity is important for my customers as they sell paint and so getting the scanner, screen and printer to work in harmony is important. It is fine with a good CRT screen but how to you correct a laptop? Do you have to generate a color profile using some clever (expensive) software / specialist hardware? Or can it be done in software / using the human eye (as for Adobe Gamma)

Running Adobe Gamma on your laptop will get your display closer to correct than it might otherwise be, (provided your machine has the necessary brightness and contrast controls available), but LCD display technology is not conducive to consistent color, or any sort of valid calibration. The fact that your computer is portable also defeats the purpose, as it will be viewed under a variety of ambient conditions, whereas the typical CRT stays put, and the ambient conditions are much less likely to change drastically over short periods of time.

Real color management relies on quite a number of "constants" and portable computing generally removes just about all of them.

John,

thanks. I agree that moving the laptop and thus changing the ambient light causes problem but the user can always re-calibrate. The main problem seems to be that laptops don’t have brightness / contrast controls. Mine is a pretty decent Sony with a very good, bright screen but I guess there is a limit to what can be done to get it exactly right

What do you mean downloaded it? Adobe Gamma comes with Photoshop, and is installed when you install Photoshop.

You just launch the control panel and follow the directions.
