I was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions on how I could get Photoshop to save as certain file extensions. Actually, just one extension… ".pcx". A coworker has the ability with his installation of Photoshop 7 to save as a .pcx file, whereas my installation of the same version does not offer that extension. Attempting to save as another type while adding the extension simply makes the file named "filename.pcx.tiff" (obviously depending on the selected file type). Let me note that this is the *exact* same file with the exact same settings. Both installations of Photoshop are upgrade versions, and both computers have been upgraded from version 6. We both are running Win2kPro.

Any suggestions or requests for further information can be sent to – just remove the "XYX" from emails. I most likely will not check the forum often, so please send to the emails if possible.

TIA.

F1 for help files.
Read the section on "saving as"
You’ll find you can save as .pcx very,VERY easily…
All you gotta do is read.

First Tony, you’ll need to check what mode your image is in. For instance, if it’s LAB or CMYK, the .pcx file format isn’t available but if you’re in RGB, it is.

According to the Photoshop help file….

"PCX format supports RGB, Indexed Color, Grayscale, and Bitmap color modes, and does not support alpha channels. PCX supports the RLE compression method. Images can have a bit depth of 1, 4, 8, or 24."

My image is in Grayscale. 8-bit. There is no helpful information in the Photoshop help file for saving as a PCX. And, as I’ve stated, this exact same PSD can be saved as PCX without any modifications when opened on another machine. I’ve tried changing the mode to RGB, CMYK, Indexed, Bitmap, Lab, Duotone, and Multichannel, and I’ve tried discarding layers and alpha channels and still do not get the option to save as PCX.

Tony,

It sounds like your PCX file format plugin is missing, or not loading. Check the plugins|file formats directory, if you don’t see a file with the name PCX, you’ll need to reinstall to get it.

Double-extensions. Familiar problem. I had it with PS7, and other similar problems with CS. Do you have any Extensis software installed on your computer that your co-worker does not?

My problem was that saving a PSD as a JPG would often result in "File.psd.jpg." I’ve spent quite some time with Adobe on this, and we’re still working things out.

What other software do you have on your computer that’s not on your co-worker’s? List anything.

Stephanie: I do not have a PCX file in my plugins folder, only GIF, WBMP, and PNG. Would it be possible to simply transfer the PCX file from my coworker’s machine to mine and have it function properly?

8thnote: I’m not quite sure what Extensis software is, so I’m pretty sure I do not have any installed. Almost everything on my computer is on his, except iTunes 4.1.1, ACT! 2000, Flash 5, Installer VISE 3.5.1, and DivX.

Great – stole the PCX plugin from my coworkers computer, and it seems to work like a charm. Saw it load during initiation, and I am now able to save as PCX… that 120KB filesize is much better than the 10,700KB TIFF I was using. Thanks for all the help, it’s well appreciated.

tony, if you were missing that, you may be missing other stuff. you should reinstall anyway, just for completeness.

Tony – that means that you decreased the bit depth, or were using uncompressed TIFF. TIFF should have been smaller, at the same bit depth, if you used LZW or ZIP compression.
