Paste in place – why is this so difficult?

Why is it that when you cut something out from one layer and try to paste in into another layer (whether into a marquee or not) is ends up in a random place, rather than on the spot it was cut out from?

Flash (Shift-Ctrl-V) and Illustrator (Ctrl-F/B ) both have functions that let you do this, why not Photoshop as well?

Have I missed something, or am I rightfully very annoyed with this?

CTRL+J copies an selected object or layer in place, to a new layer. CTRL+Shift+J cuts an item from its present layer and onto a new layer, in place.

It’s not difficult, you simply didn’t know how. Now you do, and I’m sure you’ll see it’s easy.

Cheers!

And what would be the mouse actions for which these keyboard shortcuts are keyboard shortcuts?

And what would be the mouse actions….

Right click – layer via copy.
Right click – layer via cut.

Anyone know what Ctrl-V just doesn’t paste in place?

Learn the keyboard shortcuts, Richard. You’ll be glad you did.

Unless of course, I’m totally insensitive and you’re missing a hand. If so, I apologize for my shortsightedness.

Do you mean "why CTRL-V doesn’t paste in place?" Because, like most Adobe apps, the default action of a paste is to place the pasted object in the center of the viewable area.

You guys, I have to tell you this is the most useful forum I’ve ever been to. I was working on a project that just drove me nuts because I couldn’t paste something where I wanted it. Instructor didn’t know either.
