Connecting 2 pictures then seperating them

Say I have a picture thats 256 x 256, and I need another picture thats 256 x 256 and I need them both to line up color wise on one side. Now I know I can increase the canvas size to 512 and put them side by side and edit both were they meet up, but my problem is how do I seperate them again exactly at 256 x 256. I always seem to get like 255 or 254 x 256.

use crop tool, set for 256px x 256px in options area up top.

or maybe even better use rect marquee tool, fixed size.
